What I appreciate most about this time of the year, is that feeling of hope that arises within me as the days get just a little bit longer. As the sunshine peeks out after weeks of what has seemed to be grey. I love winter. Since I started sking I love it that much more.

I love that the snow blanketing the forrest creates light in an otherwise darker time of the year. Funny how nature compensates like that, isn’t it?

I have been enjoying the process of figuring things out on all fronts of my life this season. I decided to start my Doctorate in April, after deferring, declining and accepting nearly 12 times. What pushed me over the edge was a conversation with my Department Chair. She simply asked “What do you want to be doing in ten years?”

Aside from financial and Luc…. I have never had a long term plan. My nursing career has kind of just fallen together through seven degrees of circumstance. So I really gave it some thought, and where I would like to be in ten years got very clear.

So I am going to start! It’s a 28 month program. My schedule is great, I am not working too much and while there is never a great time to embark on such an adventure, this is actually a good time!

I did make the decision not to go to USAT Nationals this summer, which was my original goal. My first residency is in August (a week long workshop in Colorado), and a few friends and I decided to partake in Ironman Mont Tremblant, as a relay! The only courses I have been able to crack an hour have been Placid and Florida. I did IMMT in 2013 and I wasn’t able to do it, so I am on a mission to get that done!!!! But with two big trips, a trip to Nats isn’t just going to work. Bummer, but I still have plenty of adventure ahead!

This season I am going to take on a sprint / olympic distance focus for triathlon and really start to focus on running. Luc and I will start training with GVH come June, and I am working on building my mileage. Right now I am at 20 miles per week and the goal is to hit and maintain 40, that mileage is great for me and I take a long long time to get there!

Through my DNP program my main focus will be running (with swimming and cycling in there of course for cross training and recovery). Running takes less time, and has a bigger impact on fitness (for me). Plus it’s never been a focus. I am coaching an athlete through this very focus right now and she’s inspired me to give it a whirl!!!

Fitness is in my blood and while I stayed fit through grad school, I will maintain a better level of it this time around. I will be working a lot less this go round, and a 5 mile run can be squeezed in anywhere.

I don’t believe there “isn’t enough time” for fitness and health. I am lucky in that I grew up an athlete, I married an athlete. It’s as much a part of our daily lives as drinking coffee.

I recently challenged my students to track their use of social media using their iPhone. When they told me some of the numbers they hit, I pointed out that they could be at least walking on a treadmill while scrolling, and some of them have actually started doing it!

Make time for health, or make time for illness.

We have a lot of fun things coming up within our family, and I am excited to partake in all of the action. I m feeling stoked about my focus this season, I have ZERO desire to go long and that feels great. At some point people started thinking that sprint and olympic triathlon was for beginners. My aim is to change that. By the way, it’s the reason Curt has lasted so long in this sport!
